2. reverse osmosis:
Reverse osmosis technology is the most advanced, energy-saving and efficient separation technology. The principle is that the solute in the solution is separated from the solvent under the pressure above the osmotic pressure of the solution, and the purpose of purified water is achieved by the selective interception of the reverse osmosis membrane which only allows water molecules to pass through. Reverse osmosis is the core part of the process, which can remove 99% inorganic salts and organic matter, microorganisms, bacteria and so on.
Semi-permeable membrane: A thin film that is selective to the substance through it is called a semi-permeable membrane. A film that can only penetrate a solvent but not a solute is generally regarded as an ideal semi-permeable membrane.
Permeation: When the same volume of dilute solution (e.g. fresh water) and concentrated solution (e.g. seawater or brine) are placed on both sides of a container, separated by a semi-permeable membrane, the solvent in the dilute solution naturally passes through the semi-permeable membrane and flows to the concentrated solution side, the liquid level on the concentrated solution side will be higher than the liquid level of the dilute solution to form a pressure difference to reach the osmotic equilibrium state, this phenomenon is called infiltration. The pressure difference is osmotic pressure. The size of osmotic pressure depends on the type, concentration and temperature of concentrated solution, and is independent of the properties of semi-permeable membrane.
Reverse osmosis: if a pressure greater than osmotic pressure is applied on the side of the concentrated solution, the solvent in the concentrated solution will flow to the dilute solution. The flow direction of this solvent is opposite to the original direction of permeation, and this process is called reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis is a kind of separation and concentration of solute in solution separated from solvent by the selective interception of semi-permeable membrane driven by pressure. In the water treatment process, the impurities such as inorganic ions, bacteria,
viruses, organic matter and colloid in water are removed to obtain high quality water.Water through the reverse osmosis membrane is called "pure water "; the remaining part is called" concentrated water "because it contains impurities blocked by the membrane.
It can be seen from the above that the reverse osmosis process must have two conditions: one is a selective semi-permeable membrane with high selectivity and high permeability; the other is that the operating pressure must be higher than the osmotic pressure of the solution.
